Syringomyelia, often referred to as SM, is a chronic disorder involving the spinal cord. The condition occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (normally found outside of the spinal cord and brain) enters the interior of the spinal cord, forming a cavity known as a syrinx.

This syrinx often expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord. As the nerve fibers inside the spinal cord are damaged, a wide variety of symptoms can occur, depending upon the size and location of the syrinx.

There are two major types of SM. In most cases it is related to a congenital malformation involving the hindbrain (cerebellum) called a Chiari I Malformation. This malformation occurs during fetal development and is characterized by downward displacement of the lower part of the brain (cerebellar tonsils) beneath the foramen magnum, into the cervical spinal canal. This displacement blocks the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid. When normal flow is obstructed, a syrinx can form in the spinal cord. Not all patients with Chiari Malformations will develop a syrinx, however.

SM can also occur as a complication of trauma, meningitis, tumor, arachnoiditis, or a tethered spinal cord. In these cases the syrinx forms in the section of the spinal cord damaged by these conditions. As more people are surviving spinal cord injuries, more cases of post-traumatic SM are being diagnosed as the syrinx can form years after the trauma.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms develop slowly over time, but can come on suddenly after a fall or minor trauma. Sensation may be affected first. Some common symptoms include:

Loss of sensitivity to hot and cold
Numbness and tingling
Bowel and bladder function may be affected
Scoliosis
Pain
Muscle weakness
Spasticity
Paralysis (in severe cases, quadriplegia)
Scoliosis may be the only symptom in children. Often people with scoliosis undergo spinal MR imaging because of an atypical left-sided thoracic curve.

Many individuals suffer from chronic pain and some will develop neuropathic pain syndromes. This type of pain is difficult to treat. A large percentage of people have headaches which can be severe.

What should be done?

The first step after diagnosis is finding a neurosurgeon who is experienced in the treatment of SM. Finding a specialist is highly recommended. Surgery is the only viable treatment for SM, but not all patients will advance to the stage where surgery is needed. Evaluation of the condition is often difficult because SM can remain stationary for long periods of time, and in some cases progress rapidly.

Treatment is aimed at restoring the normal flow of spinal fluid. In persons with Chiari and SM, a procedure known as a posterior fossa decompression may be recommended. This procedure allows the cerebellar tonsils to move into a normal position, restoring the normal flow. After this procedure the syrinx will often reduce or resolve on its own. This can take months and may never completely collapse the syrinx. Some patients may require repeat surgeries. The most important consideration in deciding to undergo surgery is the severity of symptoms and overall quality of life issues.

In syrinxes associated with other causes, the surgical treatment is also aimed at restoring normal physiology and flow of spinal fluid. This might involve a bony spinal decompression, removing a tumor or scar tissue. In cases of tethered spinal cord, a surgical procedure is used to release the tension on the cord, allowing it to return to its normal position.

There has been some questions as to the benefits of AllinJac and what we are here for. I would like to cover some of the basic fundamentals which we feel are critical for our community to grow and succeed. POY stands for Player of the Year, an event that will take place once a year where we are guarneeing at least one $1,500 WSOP seat.

As our community grows so will the prizes available for these tournaments.

On top of the POY we will be having weekly skill leagues that take place at Poker School Online Thursday Evening and early Friday Morning. As well as freerolls and low limit buy ins across the major poker sites.

We have a unique opportunity for us to grow as a community. All money that is brought in by advertising dollars, rake, or the purcase of products and sevices through our site will have 50% of all funds given back to the community.

What will we use the funds for? We will use the funds for keeping up with the technology to provide the best community in the market. We will also be providing stakes for members that have excelled. We will also be using around 15-20% of funds for guranteed tournaments and freerolls so the money goes back to the community from where it came.  We here at AllinJac feel that this is one of the best parts of the community; it is not just a place for you to grow your experience and knowledge but you have the opportunity to grow finacially as well.

There are multiple ways to get POY points I will list some of them and there will be more to come.

1. Refer-a-Friend

2. Get top10% in a poker event that is listed on our calander

3. Purchase a product or service through AllinJac

4. Sign up to a poker site and make a small deposit by clicking the link in AllinJac

5. Provide services to the community that are needed for its development and growth. This may   include marketing work, design, proramming, and business development

6. Making Donations to the community for its development and growth.

7. There will be additional ways we will mention latter. This should get you a good idea of how serious we are at growing with you!

AllinJac is an Online Community of Gamers & Poker Players . Our objective is to improve our game while having fun at the same time. If you have made a purchase through one of our sponsors then you would immediately be included in our POY (Player of the Year) Tournament. You have referred more then 2 active person to our League and made points in at least 3 poker events.

Hearts

You have been a member of our site for more than six months and have been active in our blogs and forums. You are viewed as a good player in your own style and have completed one or more offers from our sponsors. You will be given passwords to enter free roll tournaments with cash and prizes for payouts. You will also begin to earn points for our POY (Player of the Year) tournament where we will be giving away a seat to the WSOP! You have referred more then 4 active members to our League. You have been involved in more then 10 Shadowing sessions helping out other members from AllinJac. You will also earn 10% increase in points for being in this level.

Spades

You have been a member of our site for one year or more and are active in our blogs and forums. You are viewed as someone that should be taken seriously at the table and have a good track record in tournament play. You have completed three or more offers from our sponsors and been active in play at Poker School Online and Carbon Poker. You will receive the highest point structure for our POY (Player of the Year) tournament for the WSOP seat. You have referred more then 5 active members to our League. You have been involved in more than 20 shadowing sessions helping out other members from AllinJac. You will also earn 20% increase in points for being in this level.
