Shadowing

Hello everyone here with my last post I spoke on betting and the different betting stragities, this post I will be speaking on shadowing other players. We all are here to learn more about the different types of poker and which ways are the best in playing them; thats where shadowing comes in. In shadowing a person while they are playing a tournment or just at a sit and go table I have noticed that the player wants advice in how to play a hand while playing that hand and if the person that is shadowing the player tells the player how to play the hand while the player is playing the hand then the player really isnt learning anything. While being shadowed and while shadowing others I have found a better way in shadowing the player playing the tournment. First of all I always let the player play the hand they wish to play it, and if I have any questions while the player is playing the hand then I will ask him/her,for instance, I may ask why the person bet the amount they bet; then after the hand is over I will ask what the player thought of the way they played the hand. After I know the players thoughts on the hand that was played I then will explain in the way I would of played the hand and why i would play that hand in the way I would of played it. Then after the tournment was over I ask the person of what areas they feel they need help in to improve their game, then I express of what areas they need help in. After finding out and talking with the person about the areas in which they need help in I than ask of what area they would like to start with first. After the area is decided on I explain that area in the beat of my knowledge and ask the player to try the way i explained for a week and see if that improves their game or not. Then the next week in shadowing the person I will ask of how their week went in trying the methods I suggested and see if the person would like to work on another area in which they need help in. After working with someone for a while, while shadowing and after a tourney then the player learns different styles of the game and the shadower learns different things about that person. After shadowing in this way and being shadowed in this way I have found out that I learn more as a player and a shadower in different aspects of the game. Now each person has a special game that they are the best in and they would do best in shadowing in that game, if it be limit,No-limit holdem, Omaha, Omaha hi/low. Stud, Stud hi/low, or Razz who knows but the person that is willing to do the shadowing. Overall, shadowing a player of a certain game in a tournment helps both the Player and the shadower. Betting

Everyone bets differently in playing N/L Texas Holdem. I had trouble with my betting until I started doing shadowing sessions, after doing many shadowing sessions I started getting a grasp on betting. In having a good hand pre-flop, i have learned in betting 3x the big blind + one big blind for each limper; in doing this I have seen that not as many players will stay in too see the flop. For betting the flop through the river it has came to my attention that betting 1/3, 2/3, or 4/3 of the pot depending is the most comfortable bet at the time will show the players at the table of how serious you are about the way you play; usually a bet of 2/3 of the pot will be sufficient most of the time. In betting 2/3 of the pot that is usually a nice size bet to play and usually there will be fewer players that stay in the hand. Although, i change my betting style from time to time so that players do not pick up on my style of playing, in doing this new players that you do not play against very often will not suspet anything and the players you play against often will either be afrais or curious in the style in which you are playing. I think changing betting styles weekly is a good idea, although it would be better to have about three differnt types of betting styles to have and change them from time to time. Please comment on this post I would like to hear your thoughts on this post.

Early Play in MTT’s – Taking the race

Hey guys, me and jac spoke yesterday and Jac has asked me to contribute to the site in the form of a few articles & video’s (some of these will hopefully be going up as soon as I have managed to get my head around it ).

For those of you who don’t know me, im Matt Taylor, online handle being a very original “MattuTaylor”. I mainly play on Pokerstars and Full Tilt poker. I left work in August of 2007 to play poker full time, and since then I have almost 200k in prizes across all poker sites including a number of wins in tournaments between the $20 and $100 buy ins on stars and full tilt. I mainly play MTT’s and 6 Max sngs, but you will occasionally see me playing heads up sngs, heads up cash & also mid-stakes Razz & horse.

Anyway, this was a post I made on another site a few weeks ago that I thought would be a great first article on allinjac.com. I hope you enjoy the read and would love to hear your comments.

Hey guys,

after reading through a couple of hands in here yesterday, and discussing a hand with a friend on MSN the other day, I decided that I was gonna write something on early play in MTT’s, especially risking your chips in situations you pressume are races.

So we all know the situation pretty well. You’re in a $11 donkament and some moron open shoves his 3k stack at 15/30 and you’re folded to on the BB (for arguments sake) with TcTh.

Now, a lot of people in this situation, a lot of very good players, will fold. There reasoning being that it just isn’t necessary to gamble your stack at these levels on a coinflip (this is pressuming that 9/10, the original shover has AK or even on occasion AQ).
They have a point. And a good one too. This early on, it is not essential to gamble your stack on what you pressume is a 50/50. But whats wrong with it?
In my opinion nothing.

Whenever I discuss early tournament play, I always say in my eyes there are 2 approaches.
1) Sit tight and relax, pick spots and make the most of them.
2) Get involved, see pots and gamble in an effort to obtain a stack early.

Now number 1 I wont be discussing here, primarily because it is just basic poker strategy that everyone uses.

Its number 2 that really gets my brain going, and number 2 i’m going to concentrate on.

I would say, these days, in the situation I gave at the start of the thread I will call 8/10 times. The other 2 times being vs a)someone I know is capable of shoving a big PP and 2)If i misclick .

My thought process behind this is pretty simple and as explained slightly above.
In MY personal game at the minute (bear in mind your game should contain multiple arsenals, and changing up every few months or similar, especially against regular opponents, will only do you good) I am looking to obtain chips early and 50% of the time I’m going to win the race and have a 6k stack early on.

Now a few may be asking, “whats the point in having a 6k stack this early” or similar questions, but as I pointed out, if I do win the race I have this stack where I can further see more flops with more debatable hands, and, hopefully obtain more chips early.

My biggest strength is definitely my big stack play. For anyone who has seen me play, or watched any of my hand histories on PokerXfactor, you will know that with chips I am very aggressive and only on a very rare occasion will I give away a big chip lead.

As I’ve been saying all along, if you’re comfortable hanging around and are comfortable playing short stack poker and you also have good knowledge of shove/fold situations, there is nothing wrong with sitting around tight early on and “picking spots” or playing small-ball.

As with all situations in poker, there are times when I will change things, one example off the top of my head would be a live tournament, we all know that on the internet if we go out we can instantly begin another MTT, thus another big reason I am willing to take these risks early on.

My point of this thread was just to point out that there are a number of different approaches to this kind of situation. Neither, IMO, is either right of wrong. It all depends on your strengths and as with all sports and situations that you come across in life, everyone knows that it is important to play to your strengths.

Playing Pocket Kings

Awhile back I wrote an article on playing pocket aces so I thought I would continue down the line with playing the pocket kings. Kings are a very strong hand and only can be beat by aces preflop. I have seen many people push all in with pocket kings even if they have a big stack. I believe this is the correct play if you are short stacked but even though kings are a very powerful preflop hand why risk a big stack to being out drawn.

My play on pocket kings would be to come in to the pot with a bet about 4 times the big blind plus the amount of the bet of each limper. If you are going against a big raiser my take on this is to put it in for a reraise that is about pot size then see if you are reraised again. You then have to make a decision if you are willing to risk your entire stack preflop. When you are heads up the odds are in your favor that you aren’t going to run into pocket aces but this could very well happen. I will illustrate towards the end of this topic about the chances of kings winning and the chances of the kings improving to a better hand.

Okay now lets assume that you have made your raise and have been called but not reraised and the flop comes out with an ace on board. If you are first to act after the flop you need to put in a feeler raise to see where your kings stand. If you face a hefty reraise then you should assume that your opponent or one of your opponents is either playing ace rag and has hit his ace or you could be facing someone who has hit two pair.

If your bet is just called it would be safe to think that your opponent or opponents have hit a smaller pair than the aces. Also if a pair hits the board you need to note that one of your opponents may have hit a set with the flop. How you handle a raise to your bet on the flop will depend on the type of player that you are playing. Most solid and tight players will disappear without a big hand preflop so if this type of player is still in the hand to see the flop you have to give that player credit for having something. A good solid player would not have stayed in facing a big reraise with ace rag unless they are short stacked.

If you are playing loose players you can still be drawn out on but your kings are probably still ahead after the flop. If you are just called on the flop you have to wait for the turn to put out a feeler bet on the turn some people will try to trap you but you have to make it cost enough for them to lay down a hand that could draw out on you with kings. Above are the tables I have to show how kings play out. Remember you need to put in a good raise preflop with kings to narrow the field down.
